Neonatal encephalopathy is an inherited progressive brain disease affecting the cortical white matter and cerebellum. It is often associated with seizures and severe neurologic signs presenting soon after birth. Dogs often succumb to their clinical signs or are euthanized by 7 weeks of age.​
Age of Onset: Clinical signs present at birth
Sex Predisposition: Any sex of animal can be affected
Clinical Course:
​Clinical signs worsen rapidly over 1-7 weeks, progressing from weakness to ataxia and generalized seizures. Dogs often succumb to their clinical signs or are euthanized by 7 weeks of age.
Clinical Signs:
Posture and Appearance
Small stature

Movement
Weak at birth
Ataxia
Whole-body tremor
Hypermetria


​Proprioception
Decreased postural reactions

Cranial Nerves
Absent menace response OU
Intracranial - diffuse
Autosomal recessive mutation in ATF2
