Necrotizing myelopathy is a progressive degenerative disease that affects young Kooikerhondje dogs that causes bilateral necrosis and softening of the tissue of the spinal cord.
Age of Onset: 3-12 months of age
Sex Predisposition: Any sex of animal can be affected
Clinical Course:
​Clinical signs worsen over the course of a few days to weeks first involving the pelvic limbs, the progressing to affect the thoracic limbs before 2 years of age.
Clinical Signs:
Movement
Ataxia
Paresis to paralysis
Recumbency

Proprioception
Proprioceptive deficits

Spinal Reflexes
Mild hyper- to hypo- reflexia
Mild hyper- to hypo- tonicity of appendicular muscles

Special Functions (e.g. respiration; urination)
Urinary incontinence
Urinary retention

Pain Sensation
Hypalgesia of pelvic and/or thoracic limbs​
White matter of the cervicothoracic spinal cord
Suspected autosomal recessive inheritance of IBA57 gene variant
