Distal symmetrical polyneuropathies are chronic progression neurologic diseases resulting from dysfunction of peripheral motor neurons.
Age of Onset: 8-10 years of age
Sex Predisposition: Any sex of animal can be affected
Clinical Course:

Clinical signs worsen over time, progressing from paraparesis to tetraparesis.
Clinical Signs:
Posture and Appearance
Sunken tarsi while standing
​
​Movement
Paraparesis to tetraparesis
Pseudohypermetric pelvic limb gait
Overflexion of hips


Proprioception
Postural reaction deficit in all limbs

Spinal Reflexes
Hyporeflexia

Muscle Atrophy
Bilateral masticatory muscle atrophy
Atrophy of distal appendicular muscles​
Peripheral nerves
Suspected autosomal recessive inheritance
