Hereditary polyneuropathy/neuropathy is an idiopathic degeneration of nerves often characterized by axonal degeneration and hypomyelination.
Age of Onset: 2-7 months of age
Sex Predisposition: Any sex of animal can be affected
Clinical Course:
​Clinical signs worsen over time
Clinical Signs:
Posture and Appearance
Wounds on the dorsal aspect of the paws

Movement
Collapse
Hyporeflexia
Progressive paraparesis to tetraparesis

Proprioception
Proprioceptive deficits

​Cranial Nerves
Absent palpebral reflex

Spinal Reflexes
Decreased spinal reflexes
Decreased patellar reflex
Absent panniculus reflex
Absent anal reflex (normal anal tone)


Special Functions (e.g. respiration; urination)
Exercise intolerance
Inspiratory stridor
Megaesophagus
Urinary incontinence (dribbling urine)


Muscle Atrophy
General muscle atrophy
Muscles of mastication (CN V)

Pain Sensation
Absent pain sensation of distal limbs
