Polioencephalomyelopathy is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting the gray matter of the brain and spinal cord.
Age of Onset: 5 months - 1 year
Sex Predisposition: Any sex of animal can be affected
Clinical Course:
Clinical signs worsen over the course of several months progressing from psychomotor seizures to recumbency ​
Clinical Signs:
Behavioral/Mental Awareness
Psycho-motor seizures
Otherwise normal mentation


Movement
Spastic tetraparesis (extensor tone of thoracic limbs > pelvic limbs)
Fatigue after movement, progressing to recumbency
Ataxia


Cranial Nerves
Positional nystagmus
Head-tilt
Facial twitching


Spinal Reflexes
Patellar hyporeflexia to areflexia

Muscle Atrophy
Diffuse appendicular muscle atrophy​
Brain and spinal cord
