Alaskan Husky Encephalopathy and Polyneuropathy is a specific form of inherited nervous system degeneration. ​
Age of Onset: 6 weeks of age
Sex Predisposition: ​Any sex of animal can be affected
Clinical Course:
​Clinical signs worsen over the course of 3 months
Clinical Signs:
Posture and Appearance
Sternal recumbency with elbows and carpi flexed, resistant to manual extension
Pelvic limbs stiff when moved
Wide-based stance
Angular limb deformities 


Movement
Generalized proprioceptive deficits (paresis)
Short-stepped gait in all limbs
“Bunny-hopping” pelvic limb gait
Pelvic limbs slow to protract
Swaying movement when walking

Proprioception
“Tendency to walk on the dorsal surface of the paws” 
Delayed hopping postural reactions
Delayed paw placement reaction

Spinal Reflexes
Hypertonic pelvic limbs
Patellar hyper-reflexia

Special Functions (e.g. respiration; urination)
Abnormal vocalizing (voice was decreased in volume)
Regurgitation after eating

Muscle Atrophy
Muscle atrophy of the crural and antebrachial muscles
Multi-focal however predominantly peripheral nervous system clinical signs
Autosomal recessive
